For the second year in a row Real Local RVA hosted a Reverse Farmer’s Market intended to facilitate the wholesale relationships between growers and small scale producers with vendors interested in purchasing local food. Vasen Brewing Company were gracious hosts of the event. The typical farmer’s market format was reversed, and the vendors remained at their respective tables while the farmer’s and producers traveled the room.
Farmers and producers had the opportunity to tell the story of their businesses, explain growing practices, connect one-on-one with local business owners who were interested in buying their product and ultimately secure selling plans for 2018. A major motivation for this event is to provide buyers with a better understanding of a farm’s business model and for them to better understand a buyer’s business without the pressure of executing a transaction. The event provides an opportunity to make connections that can set a menu, store or product apart from the competition. We believe we are sowing the seeds for greater collaboration between growers and local businesses!
A few comments about the event:
“Thanks so much for hosting the Reverse Farmer’s Market! I enjoyed meeting everyone and putting faces with some familiar names. For Agriberry, the most fruitful connection was probably with RVA Hospitality. Chef Alex was very excited about the possibility of featuring our fruit on his menu during our regular season. We already work with a number of the vendors who were present, but it did give me the opportunity to discuss our frozen and jam offerings, which several were not aware of. Thanks again for the time and effort you put into the Reverse Farmer’s Market, and all that you do for the local farming community. I look forward to more Real Local RVA events and to working with you again soon. “ – Agriberry Farms
“The event went well for us! We got lots of resources and are excited to start using some of the items.” Little Saint Restaurant
“We made several contacts at the Reverse Farmers Market and have delivered produce to those contacts! I believe this is the model that will help integrate farmer, grocery, restaurant and generally aid in communication across industries. I look forward to more functions like the Reverse Farmers Market.” – Old Dominion Organics
“I think the reverse farmers is a fantastic idea, especially for small farms and restaurants in Richmond. One suggestion could be to have this event quarterly, it would be great to see the seasonal availability change with every meeting.” – Rudy’s Exotic Mushrooms
