Real Local RVA’s June Meeting
RVA Women in Food
with the B side Collective
June’s meeting was one of our favorites to date. For those of you who missed it, we welcomed Courtney Mailey of Blue Bee Cider, Hannah Pollack of Nightingale Ice Cream Sandwiches, Erin Powell of Ginger Juice, and Amy Hicks of Amy’s Garden. These ladies, along with many other women entrepreneurs from the RVA food community, were featured in the new B side Collective issue. A beautifully crafted publication, the B side did an amazing job of highlighting women in our buzzing local food scene.
After a short introduction from the B side founder Ja’Nai Fredrick, moderator Robey Martin crafted a discussion that navigated the ups and downs of entrepreneurship and discussed what it means to grow as a business and how to do it thoughtfully.
With four different backgrounds, and four very different stories to tell, all of these women were in agreement on a few points:
- Stay true to who you are no matter what
- Stop listening to everyone else and follow your gut
- Owning a business is hard work and not for the faint of heart
- Quality sells
- It’s ok to fail
They all attributed part of their success to Richmond’s supportive food community, and said that collaboration is key when you are growing a business. Saying “yes” to everything early on has its benefits.
We are so thankful to all who where involved with this event. Thanks to our panelists and awesome moderator, to the B side Collective, to St. Stephen’s Church for hosting us, to Miss Priss Tea and Eggspress for the delicious food and drink, and to Sarah Der for the photos. Support these women, and all your other local farmers and food businesses. As Ja’Nai says – help us grow Richmond’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.
