Co-Owner
Libbie Market
Sam has never traveled far from his roots in the heart of Richmond’s West End. Other than the four years he spent obtaining his bachelors degree at Virginia Tech, Sam has lived, worked, and raised his family less than a mile from his childhood home just off of Grove Avenue.
After a short-lived stint in the advertising business, Sam took a job in 1997 with a local food brokerage company thus beginning a career in the retail grocery business that has spanned 25 years and included invaluable work experience with well known industry leaders like Ukrops Supermarkets and Supervalu Corporation. In 2016 Sam became Co-Owner of Libbie Market, joining partners Buster Wright and David Taylor, in their quest to continue providing excellent customer service in a friendly, well-stocked, local market.
Libbie Market was founded in 2010 after the Ukrop’s grocery store chain was purchased by Ahold/Martin’s and the small specialty store known as Joe’s Market was set to close. A groundswell movement was started by local residents who wanted to save the market. Buster Wright and David Taylor, both former employees of Ukrop’s, decided to buy the market. Soon after an agreement was reached, organizers of the “Save Joe’s Market” campaign held a party to celebrate the preservation of this Richmond tradition. The store was given a new name and was transformed into a full-scale grocery store. As it approaches it’s 10 year anniversary, Libbie Market remains a favorite spot for customers to shop, dine and enjoy all the offerings of a large grocery store with the convenience of an upscale neighborhood market. Known for its Prepared Meals, In-store Bakery, Coffee Bar, and Butcher shop exclusively featuring Certified Angus & Prime beef, Libbie Market is the perfect place to shop for everyday items as well as unique artisan products. Libbie Market also offers freshly made gourmet sandwiches, freshly prepared sushi, salad bar, extensive wine and specialty/local beer selections, and catering services.
